Joomla! 1.5 or 1.6?

Finally, Joomla! 1.6 has been released. However, Joomla 1.5 is still around - and so are thousands of extensions and templates, developed specifically for this version of Joomla. Should you stick with 1.5 or step over to 1.6? These are the options.

1. Stick with 1.5, for the time being

Your website runs using version 1.5. Because this version will still be supported for some time, you don't have to do anything. If you do'nt plan any big changes to the site - new functionality, new look and feel - you can leave the site as it is. Keep an eye on 1.6, however, because in the long run Joomla 1.5 will no longer be supported.

2. Upgrade your website from 1.5 to 1.6

You've built a website in 1.5, but you want to take advantage of the new features in version 1.6. You can't just upgrade your site in a few clicks to 1.6. However, you can migrate all your current content and build a new and updated site in 1.6 It does take some time and effort, but you'll end up with a better sited, powered by the new 1.6 Joomla "engine".

3. Build a new site with Joomla! 1.6

Do you want to build a new site now? In that case, Joomla! 1.6 is the best choice. Now is the time to start working with it and to try out all it's new features - there are some great 1.6 books out now, and already hundreds of extensions and templates are available.
